When I heard Oregon’s Pfriem was re-releasing their Rum Barrel-Aged Imperial Porter, I hopped in the car and set sail to Hood River to pillage as much as I could.
I had no choice — this crew was last year’s GABF Mid-size Brewery of the Year AND Oregon Beer Awards Brewery of the Year. Allowing a Caribbean-kissed Dark Beer from them to slip through my fingers would be cause for mutiny!
See, unlike with Bourbon, Rum Barrels can be used over and over. So by the time the distillery is done with them, they’re often falling apart — which makes finding usable ones tricky.
But the legends of Northwest Craft at pFriem have the connections to commandeer some rich and fruity coconut-vanilla-soaked Caribbean barrels.
And when their roasty, chocolatey, 9.5% ABV Porter slumbers in those barrels for a full year, all the flavors combine to create something that tastes like a fudge drizzled Caribbean Rum Cake!
Paste Mag even calls this brew one of 6 standout Rum-Barrel beers!
As soon as you open the bottle, you’ll unleash a warm breeze of roasty malts, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour it into a glass, and it’s darker than Davy Jones’ locker. Cannon bursts of fudge with hints of cherry tantalize the tastebuds before a treasure chest of oaky vanilla comes in to batten down the hatches.
So, grab a bottle or two of Rum Barrel-Aged Porter and prepare to set sail for a sea of deliciousness. Just don’t delay — miss out on our little stash, and you’ll feel like you’re marooned on a deserted island, wondering why all the rum is gone.
